OSRS New Varlamore Boss - Hueycoatl Guide And Experience

Sep-27-2024 PST
Today, I’m excited to dive into my first 10 kill count (KC) experience with the new boss in Old School RS (OSRS). Having taken on this challenge, I wanted to share my thoughts, strategies, and an overall guide for those looking to get started. Whether you're a seasoned player or a beginner interested in bossing, this new encounter is both engaging and rewarding.

Introduction to the New Boss

First off, this new boss is incredibly fun! The mechanics are straightforward, and with the right preparation, you won’t need much food. Sharks or whatever you prefer will suffice. For my setup, I used two Guthix items and a combination of Fang Snakes—a unique mix that worked surprisingly well.

While it might seem intimidating at first, this boss is very manageable solo. Let’s break down my setup, key gear choices, and the strategy for clearing the boss in a solo instance.

My Gear Setup

One thing that stood out during my kills was the gear choice. For this encounter, Middles (presumably referring to middle-tier or mid-game gear) worked great for me, and I consider it the best-in-slot (BiS) gear for this boss. Additionally, the Void Waker—a powerful weapon in OSRS—was crucial in dealing with consistent damage.

I also carried the Lightbearer ring to help with faster special attack regeneration. While I didn’t need to camp it constantly, it was a nice bonus during the fight when I had full spec.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the essential gear:

  • Weapon: Void Waker – powerful, consistent damage output.

  • Armor: Middle-tier gear works well, but the Blood Moon set seems particularly effective for this fight.

  • Ring: Lightbearer – useful when you have a full special attack.

  • Other: Fang Snakes – these little guys provide some neat benefits in various phases of the fight.

Creating a Private Instance

Before we dive into the mechanics of the fight, let’s talk about creating a private instance. This ensures you won’t have to compete with other players for boss spawns, making it ideal for soloing.

To create a private instance:

1. Walk over to the boss area and choose to start a solo fight.

2. Pay 50,000 coins to get the instance running.

3. Step inside and get ready for the fight!

Phase 1: Dodging Boulders and Hitting the Boss

As you climb into the arena, you’ll encounter boulders that can be tagged and destroyed. These boulders have notoriously poor hitboxes, so you’ll need to click on specific spots to deal damage.

You’ll also notice that the Blood Moon set performs incredibly well here. Along with this, the Tail mechanics and cave entrances come into play, so positioning is crucial. The boss has different attack phases indicated by colors:

  • Red = Melee

  • Green = Range

  • Blue = Magic

This color-coded system helps you prepare for each phase and switch your protection prayers accordingly. Don’t worry if you miss a few attacks here and there—it’s all part of learning the fight. In my case, I missed a roll or two, but it didn’t impact my overall strategy.

Phase 2: Managing Mechanics and the First Pillar

The loot from this boss has been decent so far. Though I didn’t receive any unique drops by the time of writing, I did notice that my quidd (OSRS gold currency or wealth in-game) went from 4 million to 10 million coins after 10 kills. The drop table is generous, and players are starting to catch on to how lucrative this boss can be. For example, the wand that drops is currently going for around 60 million coins.

Once you clear the boulders, the Tail will move, allowing you to approach the boss directly. It’s essential to stay alert and dodge the incoming attacks. For this phase, use Range protection prayers and be ready to move when necessary.

A key aspect of the fight is keeping an eye on the boss’s attack patterns. The boss has devastating attacks, but dodging and proper prayer switching will keep you in the fight.

Phase 3: Second and Final Pillar

In this phase, you’ll need to charge the remaining pillars. However, you might notice that praying against one attack style drains your ability to charge another pillar. This trade-off means you must focus on one style at a time.

I recommend camping Melee prayers to keep the bar full and keep up consistent damage on the boss. If you’re soloing, it may be difficult to charge all three pillars at once. Just focus on staying alive and slowly whittling down the boss’s health.

Around 50% health, the boss will start launching waves across the ground. These waves deal 20 damage if they hit you, but they can easily be dodged by moving at the right time. Pro tip: spam-clicking just ahead of the wave will automatically dodge the attack, removing the need to time it perfectly.

Handling the Tail

After dodging the waves, you’ll need to focus on the Tail that spawns again. Timing is key here, and missing a dodge could cost you precious health. This is where Phoenix necklaces come in handy. If you get hit hard, the necklace will automatically heal you, potentially saving you from a fatal blow. Always wear the Phoenix when the waves come, and be prepared to switch back to your regular gear when it’s safe.

Final Phase: DPS and Loot

At this point, you should be nearing the final stages of the fight. Keep dodging waves, manage your prayers, and make sure to stay on top of the boss’s mechanics. During my kill, I used Void Waker specials whenever they were available, and the damage was immense. With proper prayer flicking and DPS, you should be able to finish the fight in around 9-10 minutes solo.

Once the boss is dead, collect your loot and assess your performance. While my first solo kill yielded Earth runes, I know better rewards are waiting out there, such as the wand or other high-tier items.

Conclusion

Overall, the new boss in OSRS is a lot of fun and offers both a challenging yet rewarding experience. With mid-tier gear and solid mechanics, you can manage a solo kill without too much trouble. Whether you’re hunting for profit or simply testing your PvM skills, this boss is a must-try.
