OSRS Fossil Cleaning and Usage Guide

Sep-09-2024 PST

Hello, fellow Old School RuneScape (OSRS) players! In this guide, I'll take you through the process of how to clean fossils, how to use them, and the best methods for collecting them on Fossil Island. Whether you're after kudos or experience lamps, or just looking to complete your museum displays, this guide will help you make the most out of your fossil-hunting experience.

Requirements for Cleaning Fossils

Before diving into the fossil cleaning process, let's start with the requirements:

  • Quest Requirement: You need to have completed the Bone Voyage quest to access Fossil Island.

  • Construction Level:

o At least level 5 Construction to clean fossils on Fossil Island.

o Level 21 Construction if you want to build the bank chest for quicker banking access.

Setting Up on Fossil Island

Once you've completed Bone Voyage, it's time to set up your cleaning station and bank chest to streamline your fossil cleaning and collection process.

Constructing the Archaeologists' Cleaning Bench

To start cleaning fossils, you must build the Archaeologists' Cleaning Bench. The materials required are:

  • Hammer

  • 5 Planks

  • 5 Nails

This bench allows you to clean any fossils you find on the island.

Constructing the Bank Chest

A bank chest close to your cleaning station is incredibly useful for storing fossils and other items. To construct the bank chest, you'll need:

  • Hammer

  • 2 Oak Planks

  • 1 Iron Bar

  • 5 Nails

This will give you easy access to your bank while on Fossil Island, making your fossil hunting more efficient.

How to Obtain Unidentified Fossils

Unidentified fossils can be found in several ways on Fossil Island. Below are the best methods for collecting them:

1. Skilling and Task Completion

As you explore Fossil Island, completing various skilling activities or tasks can yield fossils. While passive, this method isn't always the fastest, and it may take some time to gather enough fossils for cleaning.

2. Bird House Runs and Herbiboar Hunting

A more passive method for fossil gathering is to combine bird house runs with herbiboar hunting. This method requires 31 Hunter for bird houses and 80 Hunter for tracking herbiboars.

While it's an efficient way to gather fossils over time, it might not be accessible to all players, as herbiboar hunting requires higher Hunter levels. However, it's an excellent option if you're focused on skilling while gathering fossils.

3. Cutting Down Sulliuscep Trees

The best and most reliable method to collect fossils is by cutting down Sulliuscep Trees, which requires 65 Woodcutting. These trees are found in the Tar Swamp area of Fossil Island.

Not only is this method the fastest way to gain fossils, but it also provides substantial Woodcutting experience—up to 100,000 experience per hour if you're efficient. It's highly recommended to have a decent Hitpoints and Prayer level when cutting these trees, as the area can be hazardous.

4. Other Passive Methods

Other methods like fishing and mining on Fossil Island can also yield fossils, but they tend to be less efficient compared to woodcutting. For those who prefer variety, however, they offer alternatives to cutting trees.

Cleaning the Fossils

Once you've gathered your unidentified fossils, it's time to clean them.

Fossil Cleaning Kit

First, you'll need a Fossil Cleaning Kit. You can find one in a crate next to the Archaeologists' Cleaning Bench you constructed. The kit includes:

  • Leather Gloves

  • Leather Boots

  • Trowel

  • Rock Pick

  • Specimen Brush

Equip the gloves and boots, and keep the other items in your inventory. Now, you're ready to start cleaning fossils!

Using the Cleaning Bench

Go to your bank or fossil storage and withdraw your unidentified fossils. To clean them, simply use each fossil on the Fossil Cleaning Bench. This process will identify your fossils and allow you to use them for displays or convert them into other useful items.

One thing to note is that unidentified large fossils have a chance to turn into either large fossils or plant fossils once cleaned.

Storing Cleaned Fossils

Once cleaned, you can store your fossils in the Fossil Storage located near the cleaning bench. This is a great way to keep your inventory and bank uncluttered while gathering fossils for future use.

Using Fossils for Museum Displays

Once you've cleaned your fossils, it's time to head over to Varrock Museum to make use of them.

Varrock Museum Displays

  • Teleport to Varrock and run to the Varrock Museum.

  • Head downstairs to the area where you can fill displays with fossils.

  • Withdraw a set of cleaned fossils from the fossil storage near the stairs, then go to a display that matches the rarity of your fossils.

  • Use your fossils on the display, and you will be rewarded with experience lamps based on the rarity of the fossils you used.

The rarer the fossils, the more experience you'll gain from the lamps. You will also earn kudos by completing the displays.

Fossil Requirements for Full Completion

To completely fill all of the museum displays, you'll need:

  • 70 Small Fossils

  • 60 Medium Fossils

  • 25 Large Fossils

  • 25 Plant Fossils

Once these displays are full, you'll no longer be able to use fossils for museum displays, but you still have other uses for your fossils!

Other Uses for Fossils

Once you've filled your museum displays, fossils still have value. There are two primary ways to use leftover fossils:

1. Mycelium Pool

The Mycelium Pool is located in the northern area of the Mushroom Forest on Fossil Island. You can use fossils here to create enriched bones. This process requires volatile fungicide and calcite, and it involves going through a chemical process.

Keep in mind that plant fossils cannot be used at the Mycelium Pool. However, this is still a great way to make use of the remaining fossils if you want to create enriched bones.

2. Fossil Collector

The easier method of disposing of excess fossils is by trading them to the Fossil Collector on Fossil Island. He is located near the bank area. When you trade fossils to him, you will receive nummulites, which can be used for various purposes on Fossil Island, including paying for the usage of the bank chest.
