Get Mith Grapples for Ironmen in OSRS

Oct-31-2024 PST

Mith Grapples in Old School RS are essential for Ironman players aiming to unlock shortcuts and reach specific locations throughout the game world. By combining a Mithril Grapple with a crossbow, players can swing across gaps, scale city walls, and access unique areas. However, obtaining these grapples is a bit of a challenge, especially for Ironman players who rely solely on self-sufficient methods. In this guide, we’ll explore three main ways to obtain Mith Grapples as an Ironman, with a breakdown of requirements, processes, and efficiency for each approach.

What is a Mith Grapple?

Mith Grapples allows OSRS players to cross specific shortcuts that would otherwise be inaccessible. These shortcuts often require a combination of skill levels, including Agility, Range, and Strength, to use effectively. Since Agility and most crossbows are Members-only content, Mith Grapples are not available to free-to-play players. However, for Members, they’re highly beneficial in exploring the OSRS world.

Method 1: Skilling for a Mith Grapple (Most Recommended)

The most consistent and recommended way for Ironmen to obtain a Mith Grapple is to craft one through skilling, as this method offers a reliable and straightforward approach without relying on RNG-based drops.

Requirements:

59 Smithing: To smith a Mithril Grapple Tip from a Mithril bar.

• 59 Fletching: To attach a Mithril Bolt to the Grapple Tip and finish by adding a rope.

If your levels are below 59, consider using temporary boosts like a Dwarven Stout (for Smithing) or Mushroom Pie (for Fletching) to meet these requirements.

Crafting Process:

1. Smithing the Grapple Tip: Use one Mithril bar on an anvil to create a Mithril Grapple Tip (requires 59 Smithing).

2. Assembling the Grapple: Attach a Mithril Bolt to the Grapple Tip (59 Fletching) and then combine it with a rope to complete the Mith Grapple.

This self-crafting method is ideal for Ironmen because it provides a steady supply of Mith Grapples without needing to battle high-level enemies or trek to distant dungeons. Raising your Smithing and Fletching levels early also benefits your account progression as you can craft more valuable gear and resources later on.

Fletching Skillcape Perk: For players with a Fletching skillcape, there’s a bonus: you can search the skillcape daily to receive up to three Mith Grapples. However, at this advanced stage, your account likely won’t need a large stockpile of grapples.

Method 2: PvM Drops in the Ancient Cavern

Alternatively, you can obtain Mith Grapples through PvM (Player vs. Monster) drops, specifically from certain enemies in the Ancient Cavern. Located beneath the whirlpool at Baxtorian Falls, this area is accessible after completing part of Otto’s Barbarian Training.

Enemies That Drop Mith Grapples:

• Skeletons and Barbarian Spirits: Found in the cavern, these enemies drop Mith Grapples at a rate of 1/42.

• Mithril Dragons: Although they don’t directly drop grapples, they can drop chewed bones, which can later be used to obtain grapples (explained further below).

Challenges in the Ancient Cavern:

• These enemies are high-level, with combat levels of 130+, making it challenging for lower-level Ironman accounts.

• It’s recommended to have Protect from Melee for the Barbarian Spirits and dragonfire protection in case you encounter Brutal Dragons in the area.

For Ironmen without high combat levels, this method is less efficient than skilling. However, if you’re already training combat stats or collecting resources in the Ancient Cavern, keeping an eye out for Mith Grapples as drops could be worth it.

Alternative: Chewed Bones Drop (Mithril Dragons) If you’re set on farming in the Ancient Cavern, you could focus on Mithril Dragons, as they occasionally drop chewed bones. When offered on a pyre ship, chewed bones have a chance to reward you with two Mith Grapples at a rate of 1/21.

Considerations: This method requires not only combat skills but also levels in Woodcutting and Firemaking for the pyre ship, adding complexity to the process. Therefore, it’s typically more efficient to aim for the Smithing and Fletching requirements unless you’re already well-prepared for the dungeon.

Method 3: Respawn in Armadyl God Wars Dungeon

The third method for obtaining Mith Grapples is by utilizing the respawn mechanic in the Armadyl section of the God Wars Dungeon. This method is best suited for high-level accounts, as the dungeon’s enemies and environment can be challenging for lower-level players.

Requirements:

• Access to God Wars Dungeon: Requires 60 Agility or a Mith Grapple to enter.

• At Least One Mith Grapple in Your Inventory: Required for entry into the Armadyl area.

Obtaining Mith Grapples via Respawn:

1. The Armadyl section of the dungeon contains a box by the exit that gives you a Mith Grapple if you’re carrying none. This is designed to prevent players from getting trapped inside without a means to leave.

2. To farm multiple grapples, drop the one in your inventory and grab a new one from the box.

3. Once you’ve collected a few, teleport to a bank, deposit them, and repeat.

Why This Method Works for High-Level Players:

• Grapples have a 1/25 chance of breaking when used. As a result, it’s often helpful to keep several in the bank for when they’re needed.

• For advanced Ironmen who already have one Mith Grapple, this respawn method is a practical way to stock up without crafting additional grapples.

Using this approach is generally quicker than crafting, as it circumvents both skilling requirements and PvM drop rates. However, note that if you don’t already own a Mith Grapple, you’ll need to obtain your first one through crafting or PvM first.

Conclusion

For Ironman players in OSRS, Mith Grapples can be obtained through a blend of skilling, combat, and environmental respawns, each with its pros and cons. While crafting a Mith Grapple yourself through Smithing and Fletching offers the most reliable approach, combat in the Ancient Cavern and the Armadyl God Wars Dungeon respawn offer situational alternatives. The importance of Mith Grapples becomes more apparent as you progress, allowing you to complete Achievement Diaries, access hard-to-reach areas, and tackle new challenges across the game.
