Eight Strategies You Should Implement in OSRS
Oct-10-2024 PSTOld School RS (OSRS) has always been loved for its freedom. Players can take countless different approaches to the game, whether they’re grinding for efficiency, experimenting with obscure methods, or playing without ever reading a guide. The beauty of OSRS lies in its ability to offer a unique experience tailored to each player's style. However, regardless of how you like to play, some universally beneficial strategies can make your journey in Gielinor smoother, more efficient, and more enjoyable.
Here are eight tips that can help players, new and old alike, improve their gameplay experience in OSRS.
1. Moonlight Moths: A Cost-Effective Alternative to Prayer Potions
Moonlight Moths are a relatively new item that many players might not even know about, but they offer a surprisingly strong and cost-effective way to restore Prayer. This is especially true for players with low Prayer levels. Unlike Prayer potions, which scale based on your Prayer level, Moonlight Moths restore a flat 22 Prayer points per use—regardless of your level.
For lower-level accounts, this is a game-changer. Moonlight Moths cost around 45 GP per Prayer point, while Prayer potions are significantly more expensive, often costing upwards of 150 GP per Prayer point. Even as your Prayer level increases and the cost of Prayer potions decreases, Moonlight Moths remain the more affordable option.
That said, they do have a drawback: they only offer two uses per inventory slot, compared to the four doses of a Prayer potion. If you're tight on inventory space during a boss fight or complex quest, it might be better to bring potions. But for everyday tasks like Slayer, questing, or general PvM content, Moonlight Moths are an efficient, money-saving alternative.
2. The Energy Threshold Setting: A Small Change with Big Impact
A newer feature that's gone under the radar for many players is the energy threshold setting, which automatically re-enables running when your run energy exceeds a set percentage. This simple feature eliminates the annoyance of having to manually toggle running on and off, particularly when you're consuming stamina potions or trying to conserve energy.
Setting the threshold to 1% means your character will automatically start running as soon as they have any energy to spare. This can save you time in almost any activity, from questing and skilling to PvM encounters.
3. Maximize Slayer Efficiency with Offensive Prayers
One aspect that players often overlook when training Slayer or engaging in non-boss PvM encounters is the power of offensive prayers. Prayers like Piety or Rigour are incredibly potent and can make a far bigger impact on your DPS than gear upgrades alone.
For example, it's usually more effective to wear prayer-boosting gear like the Proselyte set or Saradomin's murmur while camping Piety or Rigour, rather than wearing Bandos or other high-strength gear without using prayers. Prayer-boosting gear can greatly reduce the cost of maintaining prayers, making it both efficient and affordable to use offensive prayers during Slayer tasks.
4. Prepare for the Worst: Stock Your Death Coffer
Dying in OSRS can be expensive, especially when engaging in high-end content like raids, Zulrah, or Vorkath. Death fees can reach up to 500k per death, which adds up over time. To mitigate this, it's smart to stock your death coffer with valuable items that can be sacrificed for death costs.
The trick here is to monitor the Grand Exchange for items that have recently plummeted in value. Death coffers take into account the Grand Exchange value of items, but they don’t always adjust to price fluctuations quickly. By sacrificing items that have temporarily dropped in price, you can sometimes get items into your death coffer at half the price, effectively saving money on future death fees.
5. Use the Osmumten's Fang for Slayer Tasks
For a long time, players (myself included) have defaulted to using the Abyssal Whip or blowpipe for most Slayer tasks. However, the Osmumten's Fang has proven to be a highly competitive option, particularly against enemies with higher defense.
For many Slayer tasks—such as Abyssal demons, metallic dragons, black demons, and gargoyles—the Fang outperforms the Whip. Even on tasks where the Whip or blowpipe is still technically better, the Fang is competitive enough that it’s a viable option.
With the Fang priced at around 10 million GP, it’s not only a fantastic option for high-defense Slayer monsters but also a versatile weapon that you can use in a wide range of content.
6. The Hunter's Sunlight Crossbow: A Mid-Game Powerhouse
For players training ranged, especially in the mid-game, the Hunter's Sunlight Crossbow is an underrated gem. This weapon is not only incredibly cheap at around 5,000 GP, but it also offers a faster attack speed (three ticks) and a greater range than the Rune crossbow.
This makes it a great choice for low to mid-level training against monsters like Sand crabs or Ammonite crabs. It even holds its own in higher-level content, such as Basilisk Knights.
The unique ammunition it uses—Moonlight and Sunlight antler bolts—are also affordable, making this crossbow an efficient choice for players looking to train at range without spending too much OSRS gold.
7. Don’t Forget to Use Divine Potions
Divine potions are an upgrade many players neglect, but their benefits are significant, especially in high-end PvM scenarios. These potions keep your boosted stats at their maximum for the entire five-minute duration, which can make a big difference in your DPS output.
For example, if you're using a Bow of Faerdhinen (Bofa) at 99 Ranged, your max hit is 46. If your Ranged level drops by even one point, your max hit decreases to 44—a significant DPS loss. Divine potions prevent this drop, ensuring that your stats stay boosted, which is crucial for bosses or high-end PvM.
8. Upgrade to Sulfur Nagas for Combat Training
For years, Sand crabs were the go-to AFK combat training method. However, Sulfur Nagas, unlocked after completing Moon's Apparel, offers a superior experience. These monsters have negative flat armor, meaning that each hit you land is boosted by an additional five damage. This makes dual-hit weapons like the Sulfur blades or the dual maco hle particularly effective.
What’s more, Sulfur Nagas drop free Prayer and combat potions, which reduces supply costs, and the overall XP rates here can exceed 150k per hour as you near 99 in Attack, Strength, or Defense.
In conclusion, while there are many ways to enjoy OSRS, these eight tips can improve both your efficiency and overall enjoyment, whether you're focused on PvM, Slayer, or simply maximizing your account’s progress. By embracing these strategies, you’ll find that your time in Gielinor becomes more productive and profitable, no matter your playstyle.
