Araxxor: The New Slayer Boss in Old School RS

Aug-27-2024 PST

Old School RS (OSRS) is about to get a major update with the release of Araxxor, a new Slayer boss that promises to challenge even the most seasoned players. While Araxxor might be new to OSRS, the boss isn't entirely unfamiliar to RS veterans, as a version of this eight-legged terror already exists in RS3. However, Jagex has assured the community that Araxxor's appearance in OSRS won't be a direct copy-paste from RS3. Instead, the development team has made several changes to ensure the boss fits seamlessly into the Old School experience.

Araxxor's Location and Requirements

Araxxor will be located in the Morania Spider Cave, just northeast of Darkmeyer. This cave was previously accessible only after completing the Sins of the Father quest, but with Araxxor's release, players will be able to enter the cave with just the Priest in Peril quest completed. This change makes it more accessible to players who are eager to take on the challenge without having to complete a long questline.

As a Slayer boss, Araxxor will require players to have a specific Araxsite Slayer task, which can only be obtained from level 92 Slayer onwards. Unfortunately, a generic spider task won't suffice, so players will need to rely on the luck of the draw when receiving their Slayer tasks. This might make it a bit more challenging for players to consistently engage with the boss, but it also adds an element of excitement when the task finally appears.

The Fight: What We Know So Far

Jagex has been tight-lipped about the specifics of the Araxxor fight, preferring to let players discover the mechanics for themselves. However, we do know that the encounter will be melee-oriented, with anti-venom being an absolute must-have. The fight will also feature two distinct strategies that players can choose from, each offering a different level of difficulty and speed.

The first strategy involves dealing with Araxxor's minions before they hatch, resulting in a slower but safer fight. The second strategy is to go straight for Araxxor herself, dealing with the hatchlings as they emerge, which will lead to a faster but more intense encounter. This choice allows players to tailor the fight to their preferences and skill levels, offering a more customizable and engaging experience.

The Rewards: A Closer Look at Araxxor's Loot

One of the most anticipated aspects of any new boss release in OSRS is, of course, the loot. Araxxor does not disappoint in this regard, with several new unique items that have undergone rebalancing and adjustments since their initial announcement.

1. Arania Boots

At first glance, the Arania Boots might not seem particularly impressive, but they pack a surprising punch. These boots have no defense requirement, making them accessible to lower-level accounts and unique account builds. They offer the same strength bonus as Dragon Boots, which is a significant boon for one-defense pures and other low-defense builds. Additionally, the boots provide decent ranged and magic attack bonuses, with no negative stats, making them a versatile option for various combat scenarios, including raids and PvP.

Another unique feature of the Arania Boots is their occasional immunity to web-based special attacks, which could prove invaluable in certain high-level encounters, such as Verzik Vitur in the Theater of Blood or Spindel in the Wilderness. This niche ability might not be a game-changer in every situation, but it adds an extra layer of utility to the boots that could make them a sought-after item for specific challenges.

2. Noxious Halberd

The Noxious Halberd is another exciting addition to OSRS, finally offering a viable Halberd option for players. Requiring 82 Attacks to wield, the Noxious Halberd boasts impressive stats, including a strength bonus on par with the Elder Maul and a slash bonus that rivals the Soul Reaper Axe. The weapon also maintains the traditional halberd advantage of attacking from an extra tile away, making it a potentially powerful tool in both PvM and PvP scenarios.

The Noxious Halberd also comes with a special attack that cures poison and buffs your next attack's minimum hit by the amount of poison damage you were about to take. While this special attack might not be useful in every situation, it could come in handy in specific encounters where poison is a significant threat. Additionally, the weapon has a passive effect with a 33% chance to apply venom on hit, increased to 50% when using a Serpentine Visage.

However, there are some limitations to the weapon's effectiveness. Many bosses in OSRS that are weak to slash attacks are also immune to venom, which could diminish the overall utility of the Noxious Halberd in certain encounters. Despite this, the weapon's high stats and unique abilities make it a strong contender in the current meta.

3. Amulet of Rancor

The final major unique item from Araxxor is the Amulet of Rancor, an upgraded version of the Amulet of Torture. This new amulet offers even higher attack and strength bonuses, solidifying its position as the new best-in-slot melee amulet. To create the Amulet of Rancor, players will need to use an untradeable item dropped by Araxxor to upgrade an Amulet of Torture. The crafting process requires 86 Crafting, and while the completed amulet will be tradable on the Grand Exchange, Ironmen will need to craft it themselves.

While the Amulet of Rancor provides a significant DPS boost, it may not completely dethrone the Amulet of Blood Fury as the best-in-slot melee amulet for all situations. The Blood Fury's ability to heal the wearer during combat makes it an incredibly versatile and valuable Runescape item, particularly in high-level PvM where survivability is crucial. The Amulet of Rancor, on the other hand, will likely be favored by players who prioritize maximizing DPS, especially in encounters where every bit of damage counts.

Additional Drops and Items

In addition to the major unique items, Araxxor will also drop several other notable items:

    • Teleport Scrolls: These scrolls will allow players to teleport directly to the Morania Spider Cave, making it easier to reach the boss for repeat kills.

    • Venom Gland: This new item can be eaten to deal 4 damage to yourself while curing venom and providing a brief 20-second window of venom immunity. Alternatively, it can be used to create the new Extended Anti-Venom+ potion, which offers 6 minutes of venom immunity per dose.

    • Arite Head: This item can be used to create a new variant of the Slayer Helmet, offering a cosmetic upgrade for players who want to show off their Araxxor kills.

    • Jar of Venom: This jar can be displayed in the player's house, adding a touch of Araxxor-themed decoration to their in-game home.

    • Araxxor Pet: The boss will also have a pet drop, tentatively named either Arito or Arini, adding another rare and coveted item to the list of potential rewards.
